EMERGENCIES and WHAT TO DO
**MOST IMPORTANT to First Have the Medical Team Evaluate for Brain Injury/ Concussion.**
Tooth is Knocked Out
- Find the tooth.
- Hold by the crown part and rinse the root part with water. Do not rub, scrape, or touch the root part.
- Best to push the tooth back into the socket that it fell out of, trying to reposition the tooth exactly how it was before falling out. It needs to be put back in within 5-10 minutes. Bite down into towel or clothe to stabile. If unable to put back into place, the next best option is to place the tooth inside the mouth, under the lip or tongue to keep moist. Or spit into a cup to place tooth into. Or put into a cup of milk to take to the dentist. Some emergency kits may even be equipment with “SAVE A TOOTH” preservation kit.
- See a dentist ASAP, no longer than 24 hours.
Tooth is Broken
- Find the piece of tooth that broke off if possible.
- Put the piece of tooth into a cup of water or milk.
- See the dentist ASAP, within 24 hours, and bring the broken piece to the dentist. This piece may be able to be used and reattached.
- Take OTC Tylenol or ibuprofen if needed.
Tooth is Displaced back, forward, or down.
- Try to push back into the correct position. Biting into a folded or balled up towel can help push it back.
- See the dentist ASAP.
Nose is Broken.
- Try to reposition the nose straight again.
- Pack the inside of the nose with gauze or tissue.
- Lean the head forward. Apply ice.
Cuts or Lacerations to the Face or Inside the Mouth
- Rinse area with water.
- Cover the area with a dressing, gauze or clean towel and apply firm pressure. Do not remove this first dressing even when it becomes soaked with blood, just apply a new dressing over the first one and continue pressure.
- Go to the hospital emergency room for assistance.
Lower Jaw Injury or Broken Jaw Bone
- Check to see when biting down that the teeth all come together normally.
- If teeth and bite come together normally, then apply ice and take ibuprofen to help with swelling. Switch to a soft diet. If no improvement in 24 hours then see a dentist.
- If teeth and bite do no align together normally, try to reposition the teeth and jaw back into place so that the teeth are biting together. Stabilize by wrapping a towel or bandage under the chin and tie on top of the head. Apply ice. See a dentist, Oral Surgeon or hospital emergency room ASAP.
Head and Neck Injury
- Call for emergency help immediately.
- Do not move the player.
- If unconscious, make sure the player is able to breath and there is nothing obstructing the airway.
- Try to stabilize the head with rolled towels on each side and cover the player with a blanket or towels to keep warm.
