This style of mouthguard focuses on allowing the athlete to perform better with wearing a protective mouthguard. When the jaw, bite and muscles are set in the most physiological relaxed state, which is a down and forward position, it will help in several of the following ways.

It opens the posterior airway more, allowing for better breathing through both the nose and the mouth simultaneously. The opening in the anterior between the teeth allows for better airflow through the mouth even while biting into the mouthguard. The increase in airflow will then allow for better oxygen exchange to the muscles and less fatigue.

The condylar space is more open and cushioned by the plastic of the mouthguard from impact. It cannot be proven that a well made, well fitting mouthgaurd allows fighters to be able to take more hits, but talking directly to fighters and hearing first hand from their experiences, you would think this is the case.

Biting while the jaw is in the best physiological state allows for better muscle recruitment and thus more power. Click on the article below.
